Pricing bespoke kitchens in Brixton

Several things affect the price:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How square the room is
  • The width and height of the space

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Helping us understand the room

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Your postcode and the borough

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Bespoke kitchens in Brixton

A dresser brings a traditional feel to a kitchen, and in a period house it can look as if it has always been there. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are spaces sized for your oven and fridge and a larder for food and small appliances.

An older kitchen often has a sash window and a back door, which fix where things can go. With a large share of the homes around Brixton built before 1919, the cabinets are planned around the windows and doors you have. Your plumber connects the sink where the design puts it. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted kitchen in a period house.

Birch plywood

Kitchen drawers carry heavy pans and plates, and birch plywood suits them.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Think about how the cabinets will get in
  • Check there’s room around an island before planning one
  • Think about how you cook and what you store
  • Share the layout with your other trades

Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.

Think about how the cabinets will get in. Workshop-made furniture comes in sections sized for stairs, hallways and lifts, so let us know about any narrow spots.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Brixton

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Brixton?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit bespoke kitchens to the uneven walls of an older house in Brixton?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

How long does fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Will you connect the sink and appliances?

No. We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and electrics by your electrician, and we plan the cabinets around their work.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Fitting day, step by step

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Advice

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

A common reason is a room that ready-made units don’t fit. Off-the-shelf cabinets come in set widths, leaving gaps at the ends and above. A bespoke kitchen is made to the room from the start.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • An island where space allows
  • Open shelves with cupboards below
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • A kitchen for a room that isn’t square

Living in a block of flats near Brixton station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Kitchens in Brixton homes

In the neighbourhood around Brixton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Brixton is partly covered by the Rush Common and Brixton Hill Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. A van working in Brixton will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Kingswood House, about 2.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. For a family home near Sudbourne Primary School, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer.
