  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You let us know about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft, as everything has to get up there.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.

How we make loft storage for Brockley

Behind an eaves door, there is often insulation and a need for ventilation. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. When we visit in Brockley, we will see what’s there. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space under the eaves going to waste and a loft room with too many jobs.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace normally has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. A large share of the homes around Brockley were built before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the eaves cupboard designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Questions from Brockley

Is Brockley in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes, we work across Lewisham, Brockley included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Brockley?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No, the conversion itself is not our work. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. The storage is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the stairs and landing as clear as we can.

Why people ask for loft storage in Brockley

Boxes, suitcases and seasonal things need a home. Eaves cupboards keep them out of sight. It keeps the room tidy.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

If you live near Blythe Hill Fields, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Loft storage in Brockley: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 57% of the housing in the area around Brockley, with about 12% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The Brockley Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Brockley. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. The share of homes built before 1919 around Brockley, about 57%, is well above the figure for Lewisham as a whole, about 36%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Hilda, less than half a mile west of the centre of Brockley, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Queen's House, about 2.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Brockley is about 1 mile north of New Cross, in the London Borough of Lewisham. Wherever you are in Brockley, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We cover places right across Lewisham.

How we price loft storage

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • How big the furniture is
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

Materials and finishes

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the back of the eaves within reach. We size each drawer for what you plan to keep in it. They suit clothes, bedding and boxes.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It is applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.
