Loft storage in Blackheath
How fitting day works
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Post-war homes often have concrete or block walls, so the right fixings are part of the plan for fitting day. Floors and doorways are protected while the sections come in.
- You get in touch and let us know about your converted or boarded loft.
- At the design visit we measure the knee walls, slopes and stairs and plan the storage with you.
- We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
- Your storage is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted in the loft and checked, door by door.
Preparing the room
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Ask for a quote

How we make loft storage for Blackheath
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Drawers bring the back of the space within reach. We measure and plan for the space you have in Blackheath. We make eaves cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wasted space behind the knee walls and seasonal things cluttering the loft room.
Post-war housing makes up a good share of the homes around Blackheath, and in London that can mean houses or flats in blocks. In a house of that age, the stairs often have a cupboard below that can be reworked, while in a flat, the hallway and any recess are the places to look. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Practical tips
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
- Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Note how narrow the loft stairs are
Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.
Do not overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners. A quick sort every so often helps. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.

FAQs: loft storage in Blackheath
Do you make loft storage for homes in Blackheath?
Yes. Blackheath is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lewisham and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Does a conservation area in or near Blackheath affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Will the storage fit up my loft stairs?
We measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft room. We size every section for the tightest turn, and then assembled in the loft.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
The problems loft storage solve
Some people want to hide clutter in the eaves. Cupboards behind the knee wall hide them away. It keeps the room tidy.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- A new loft conversion that needs storage
- Low eaves that nobody can use
- Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
- A loft room with too many jobs
Close to Manor House Gardens? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
Loft storage in Blackheath: local notes
In the streets around Blackheath, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 42%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 36%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Part of Blackheath is in the Blackheath Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you are not sure. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Lewisham included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Blackheath, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.
Near listed buildings like Numbers 1 to 14 (consecutive) the Paragon, less than half a mile east of the centre of Blackheath, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of All Saints, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.
