About our fitted wardrobes in Chalk Farm
Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. Others work around a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are space under the eaves going to waste and mismatched bedroom furniture.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Chalk Farm, and many blocks have rules about using the lift and when work can happen. Checking with the building’s managing agent early keeps the day running smoothly. A leasehold flat may need consent for fixing to walls, so check your lease first.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Doors and drawer fronts
Doors can be plain, panelled or shaped to suit the room. You choose a colour that matches or contrasts with the room.
Birch plywood
For drawers that are used every day, birch plywood boxes are hard-wearing, so they hold their shape.
FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Chalk Farm
My home in Chalk Farm is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Chalk Farm?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?
Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted and can include bedside shelves. We measure the bed and the room during the design visit.
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included. We talk it through at the measuring visit.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
How we price fitted wardrobes
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- The width and height of the space
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking near your home
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.
Helping us understand the room
To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.
- You send us some details about the room and the storage you need.
- We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out, so you can see what’s included.
- We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.
Before fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Why bespoke in Chalk Farm?
Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start, and adjustable shelves keep some flexibility. In a flat, walls are often broken up by radiators, doors and sockets, and standard widths rarely fit between them. Fitted furniture is made for the spaces that are left.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Looking after your furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
- Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
- Tell us which walls face outside
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall in advance
Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can dull the paint.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and deal with any damp early.
Chalk Farm homes and fitted wardrobes
In the area around Chalk Farm, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 41%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Chalk Farm include Chimps Breeding Colony the Gorilla House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south, and Church of St Martin (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 41% of homes in the neighbourhood around Chalk Farm were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Older bedrooms typically have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Silas Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Winfield House, about 1.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a flat near Kentish Town West station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
