Fitted cupboards in Three Mills
Is it time for fitted cupboards?
The usual reason is simple: there is too much stuff and not enough storage. Coats end up over the banister and shoes spread across the hall. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and leaves the room around it clear.
Requests we hear often include:
- Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
- Tall cupboards where space is short
- Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
- Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
For families living near East London Science School, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
What to check before you book
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
Fitted cupboards in Three Mills: what you get
Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. Typical reasons to get in touch are floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat and a neat cupboard around the boiler; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Around Three Mills, many homes were built since 2000, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?
Flat-pack cupboards can be put together quickly by a confident DIYer, and that is a real advantage. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, and in return the cupboard is built for your home. In an open-plan room, standalone pieces can look scattered, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

How we price fitted cupboards
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Parking near your home
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
Helping us understand the room
These details help when you get in touch:
- How you want to use the space
- Where you live, with the postcode
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, use our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.
Fitting day, step by step
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.
- We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold.
- We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
- You get a quote in writing for the cupboards we’ve agreed, for you to read through.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop.
- We bring the cupboards to your home and fit them to the space.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Could you do it yourself?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Common questions about fitted cupboards
Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Three Mills?
Yes. Three Mills is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Newham and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
I live in a flat in Three Mills. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?
Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly and still leaves them reachable. Moving them isn’t our work; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.
What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?
MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in the colour agreed with you.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you use our contact form.
Fitted storage in Three Mills
About 56% of the homes in the area around Three Mills went up since 2000, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Three Mills is in the Three Mills Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. All of London, Newham included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Three Mills fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.
Living in a block of flats near West Ham station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.
