Fitted cupboards for homes in Knightsbridge

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it is trimmed to the walls so there are no awkward gaps. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. People typically come to us about a neat cupboard around the boiler and making use of an awkward alcove or corner, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Knightsbridge, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the fitted cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so fitted cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Advice

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

Fitted cupboards in Knightsbridge: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Knightsbridge were built before 1919 (about 67%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 15%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 17 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Knightsbridge. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Purpose-built flats are home to about 59% of households in the neighbourhood around Knightsbridge, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If your children go to Hellenic College of London or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Apsley House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

When a house gains a utility or boot room, people want it fitted out properly. There are appliances, coats, boots and cleaning things to fit in, and a run of fitted cupboards can hold them neatly.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • A utility room with proper storage
  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing

The wider area includes historic houses such as Apsley House, about 0.5 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Why bespoke in Knightsbridge?

Standard cupboards come in set widths and heights, and the space around them is often wasted. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, so less space goes to waste. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What you get with us

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Every quote follows a design visit

Common questions about fitted cupboards

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Knightsbridge?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

How long does fitting take?

Every job is different. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know before we start.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.
