What affects the price in Bow Common

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How square the room is
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Approximate measurements of the space

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

Fitted cupboards in Bow Common

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option, so there’s somewhere to sit by the door. If you are living with landing shelves for bedding and towels and built-in storage that matches the woodwork, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Newer homes tend to have finished floors that scratch easily, so we cover them while we work. Many homes around Bow Common were built since 2000, and their plasterboard walls need fixings into the studs or made for the board. The storage can sit on its own plinth or be scribed over the skirting.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even. A door that starts to rub can usually be set right at the hinge.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Much of London has controlled parking and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Questions from Bow Common

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bow Common?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Bow Common affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How much time does fitting need?

Every job is different. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Can you build cupboards for a boot room?

Yes, we plan the room around what needs storing such as boots, coats, laundry and the vacuum. We are carpenters, so plumbing and wiring are for your other trades.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

When is bespoke worth it?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Storage in Bow Common homes: local notes

In the area around Bow Common, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 48%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Limehouse Cut Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Bow Common. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. More than a third of the homes in the area around Bow Common (about 48%) were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so fitted cupboards are designed with fixings to suit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 2.4 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.
