Fitted cupboards in Millwall
About our fitted cupboards in Millwall
We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. We finish them by spray painting in the workshop or by hand painting, in a colour agreed with you. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear and cupboards that suit a period house.
A large number of homes around Millwall date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes often have little built-in storage. Halls, landings and the space beneath the stairs are where fitted storage can help. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so the fixings are chosen for that.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Making use of tricky spaces in Millwall
Homes built since 2000 make up about 52% of the housing in the area around Millwall, with about 24% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Millwall, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Tower Hamlets is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to Millwall fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Nicholas, about 0.5 miles south of the centre of Millwall, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Close to Mudchute Park and Farm? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Nicholas, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

Tips worth knowing
Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
- List what you want to store before the design visit
- Make sure walls are dry before we fit
- Mention any parking or lift rules
Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Where we’ve fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed as your storage changes.
Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board in the space early. They shape the design, and it’s easiest to plan for them at the start.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

What affects the price in Millwall
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How big the furniture is
- Spray painting or hand painting
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Getting in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
Is bespoke worth it?
There is a place for both. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. Where the room is tricky, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is normally the better answer. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It can still go to the ceiling.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

From workshop to your room
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Door frames and corners get covers too. The sections are assembled in the room.
- First, you let us know about the room and what it needs. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
- We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
- A quote in writing is sent to you.
- Everything is made in our workshop.
- The cupboards are fitted in your home.
Before fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Questions we are often asked
My home in Millwall is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
I live near Deptford station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not usually. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
How much time does fitting need?
Every job is different. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you will know before we start.
