Fitted wardrobes in Victoria
In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. If your home has dusty space on top of the wardrobe and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Victoria, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Bedrooms in Victoria: local notes
In the streets around Victoria, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and the years since 2000 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Victoria, 26 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
For an older house near St. Michael's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Buckingham Palace, about 0.4 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For families living near St Peter's Eaton Square CofE Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
Victoria is in the City of Westminster, about 1 mile north of City of Westminster. Whether your home in Victoria is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. In Westminster, Victoria is one of the places we cover.
Postcode districts we cover here for fitted wardrobes: SW1V, SW1P and SW1X. Our area takes in homes on streets like Eaton Lane, Gerald Road and Wilton Road, along with the roads around them, for fitted wardrobes and any of our other fitted furniture. Questions we are often asked
My home in Victoria is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Is Victoria in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes. Victoria is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Westminster and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with long hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers where it is lower. It makes good use of space that’s hard to furnish.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Is it possible to have storage over the bed?
Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted, with wardrobes at the sides and cupboards overhead. We measure the bed and the room at the design visit.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed at the design stage.
Doors and drawer fronts
Door styles range from simple flat fronts to panelled ones. They’re painted to match or contrast with the walls.
When you need someone else
It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Structural changes to the room
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

How fitting day works
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
- You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
How to prepare
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Arranging a design visit
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
