Fitted wardrobes in Holloway, Islington

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Holloway starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

Fitted wardrobes in Holloway

Practical tips

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • List the things that will not hang, such as jumpers and shoes
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that is barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and slide doors without forcing them. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Holloway

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an awkward corner into storage. If your home has musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Holloway, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Does a conservation area in or near Holloway affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near Drayton Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, then assembled in the bedroom. Tell us if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop before we come to fit them.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused. We measure the bed and the room during the design visit.

Bedrooms in Holloway: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Holloway were built before 1919 (about 52%) and since 2000 (about 19%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 19 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Holloway. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Holloway (about 52%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Older bedrooms normally have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use.

Near listed buildings like Odeon Cinema, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Holloway, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near St Joseph and St Padarn's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast

Living in a block of flats near Drayton Park station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
