Fitted wardrobes across Camden: what to expect
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. Typical reasons to get in touch are a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and a bedroom that never feels tidy; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
- The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.
What goes into your quote
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.
Why work with us
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- Designed for the room you have
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

Arranging a design visit
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, use our contact form.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across Camden
Homes across Camden, St Pancras, Hampstead and West End among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. The design can help one room work two ways, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.
About 49% of the homes in Camden went up before 1919, and about 16% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. More than a third of the homes in Camden (about 49%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Older bedrooms typically have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use, scribed to walls that aren’t straight. About 28% of households in Camden live in flats in converted or shared houses, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.
We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in Camden, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a written quote, then making and fitting.
St Pancras: For a family home near St George the Martyr Church of England Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live in a flat close to London Kings Cross station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
What it is made from
Hanging rails
We keep the top rail at a height you can reach. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.
Doors and drawer fronts
Doors can be plain, panelled or shaped to suit the room. They’re painted to match or contrast with the walls.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Looking after your furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and avoid knocking hangers against the inside.
Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so tell us at the measuring visit if you need to store something heavy.
What prompts fitted wardrobes
A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role while leaving space to move. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.
Some of the things we are asked to solve include:
- A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
Where other trades come in
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- Building work to create a loft room
- Structural changes to the room
Questions from Camden
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors hang true.
How do I get started?
The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
Do you work outside London?
No. We only take on work in London.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings and fitted storage suits them well. We measure the slope carefully during the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.
What are your fitted wardrobes made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.
