Hampstead Fitted Wardrobes

Fitted wardrobes for your home in Hampstead: floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to the shape of your bedroom. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, built in our workshop and fitted by us.

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

About our fitted wardrobes in Hampstead

Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bedroom that never feels tidy and space under the eaves going to waste.

Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around Hampstead date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards, leaving the breast itself clear. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early

Do not pack clothes tight against the back panel where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.

How we price fitted wardrobes

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What we need to know

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • How you want to use the space
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Examples of the look you are after

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Bedrooms in Hampstead: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 68% of the housing in the streets around Hampstead, with about 9% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Hampstead is in the Redington Frognall Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Around Hampstead, about 68% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Camden as a whole, about 49%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of fitted wardrobes.

Living in a block of flats near Finchley Road & Frognal station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Kilburn Grange Park? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Institute of St Marcellina, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Questions from Hampstead

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hampstead?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

I live near Finchley Road & Frognal station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
