Fitted wardrobes in Fortune Green: what you get

Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. Others work around a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. The layout is planned so the room does not feel boxed in. Typical reasons to get in touch are gaps above and around standalone wardrobes and wardrobes that are full to bursting, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around Fortune Green are that old. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Fortune Green?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We will design around them.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in Fortune Green?

The first step is to message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Fortune Green?

Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person, each with the rails, shelves and drawers its owner needs.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall

Fenton House, about 0.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Ask for a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They help before and after fitting:

  • Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so tell us at the design visit if you need to store something heavy.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

What we need to know

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Approximate measurements of the space

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Bedroom storage in Fortune Green

In the neighbourhood around Fortune Green, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 58%) and the years since 2000 (about 13%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 65 entries within half a mile of the centre of Fortune Green. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Fortune Green is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St John, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Kilburn Grange Park, fitted wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
