Vale of Health Fitted Wardrobes
In Vale of Health, we design fitted wardrobes around the room you actually have. We design your fitted wardrobe at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- Too little room for clothes
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Vale of Health
Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and not enough hanging space.
In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around Vale of Health are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- How square the room is
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The internal fittings
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Getting in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- How you want to use the space
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Vale of Health
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Vale of Health?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Vale of Health?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
It’s common, and it is allowed for. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.
Do I choose the paint colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
What materials do you use?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.
Fitted bedroom furniture in Vale of Health
About 64% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Vale of Health went up before 1919, and about 10% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Vale of Health is partly covered by the Hampstead Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. The share of homes built before 1919 around Vale of Health, about 64%, is well above the figure for Camden as a whole, about 49%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of fitted wardrobes.
For a family home near Christ Church Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Near listed buildings like Fenton House, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Vale of Health, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. We can plan separate sections for each person.
People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Too little room for clothes
- An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
Heath House, about 0.1 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Let us know about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
- The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
Before we arrive
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Ask for a quote
It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Advice
What we do not do
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Structural changes to the room
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
