Fortune Green Fitted Home Offices

Planning fitted home offices for a home in Fortune Green? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing.

  • A tangle of chargers and leads
  • Flimsy shelves that will not take the weight
  • A desk in the wrong light

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

About our fitted home offices in Fortune Green

In a period room, an alcove is often the right size for a compact desk. The desk and shelves are scribed to the alcove, as period walls are seldom flat. The other alcove can hold matching cupboards or bookshelves. It gives a home in Fortune Green a workspace that looks part of the room. Most enquiries start with a laptop that moves from room to room and a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Victorian and Edwardian rooms often have fewer sockets than a modern office needs, so the desk is planned around where they are, with routes for cables built in. Any new sockets are for your electrician, ideally before fitting day. With a large share of the homes around Fortune Green built before 1919, it is worth thinking about early.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
  • Notice where daylight falls at different times
  • Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
  • Check whether you will need new sockets

Before we leave, we check every drawer, door and shelf with you. The cable routes are pointed out so you know where everything goes. That way, you can start work straight away.

Hot mugs can mark paint, so a coaster is a good habit. Keep liquids away from the edge. A mat protects the area you use most.

The problems fitted home offices solve

An alcove, a landing or a space under the eaves can often take a desk. Standard desks seldom fit an alcove or a slope. A built-in desk makes the space useful.

Fitted home offices can help with:

  • A laptop that moves from room to room
  • An tricky space with no furniture that fits
  • A desk in the wrong light
  • No way to put work away

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Luke, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

What fitted home offices can’t fix

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
  • Turning an unconverted loft into a room
  • Knocking through or opening up rooms

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts when you contact us with some details about the space, including the equipment you use.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the desk, shelving and storage. New sockets are for your electrician, so it helps to think about them early.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
  4. Your office furniture is made in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The office is fitted in your home and checked, ready for work, with cable routes left clear.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Common questions about fitted home offices

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

My home in Fortune Green is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you wire in sockets for the home office?

New sockets need an electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What materials do you use for home offices?

The office is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The desk, shelves and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
