Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit.

About our fitted wardrobes in Hampstead Garden Suburb
Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. Typical reasons to get in touch are an awkward slope in a loft bedroom and too little room for clothes; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. Around Hampstead Garden Suburb, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Hampstead Garden Suburb
In the streets around Hampstead Garden Suburb, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 44%) and before 1919 (about 39%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Hampstead Garden Suburb, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Jude (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west, and The Institute (The Henrietta Barnett School) (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. All of London, Barnet included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Hampstead Garden Suburb. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.
For families living near The Henrietta Barnett School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Heath Hall, about 0.8 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If you live near Lyttelton Playing Fields, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
What affects the price in Hampstead Garden Suburb
There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Parking near your home
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Getting in touch
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- The type of home and how the room is reached
A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

From workshop to your room
You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Fitted wardrobes arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, and we arrange a design visit.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out, so you can see what’s included.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.
Preparing the room
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
Starting with a design visit
To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Do you cover homes near Brent Cross West station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hampstead Garden Suburb?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, using moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?
Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.
What we don’t do
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
