Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Walk-in wardrobes in Knightsbridge: what you get

Good light helps you see colours and find things, and any new lights or wiring are for your electrician. We can plan the units so there’s space for the lighting you want and agree the details when we measure. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe and a calmer, clearer bedroom; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Knightsbridge, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and normally cost less, and in a square room they can work. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Why us?

  • Every London borough and the City of London covered
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Built around your room
  • A spray or hand-painted finish

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Knightsbridge

I live in a flat in Knightsbridge. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Victoria station?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes, if there is enough space. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, with doors or left open. A new partition wall is building work, so that’s for your builder.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Knightsbridge homes and walk-in wardrobes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 67% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Knightsbridge, with about 15% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Knightsbridge, 17 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 59% of households in the streets around Knightsbridge live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For families living near Hellenic College of London, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live in a period home close to Deutsche Evangelische Christuskirche, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Knightsbridge

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The overall size of the piece
  • The internal fittings

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • How you want to use the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Knightsbridge

Others want a dressing table built in alongside the storage. A dressing table with drawers and a mirror can sit within a walk-in wardrobe, close to the clothes and shoes.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • A built-in dressing table
  • A walk-in wardrobe in a box room
  • A side each for a couple
  • Room for a growing wardrobe

The wider area includes historic houses like Apsley House, about 0.5 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. You receive a written quote for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
