Sudbury Wall Beds
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make wall beds for homes in Sudbury, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A living room with a bed that folds away
- A study that doubles as a spare room
- A bed that looks like cupboards by day
Wall beds for your home in Sudbury
Wall beds in Sudbury: what you get
A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, while new sockets are for your electrician. People normally come to us about a home office that also sleeps guests and a bed that fills a little-used room, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Around Sudbury, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so it is a room shape worth planning for. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Materials and finishes
Bed mechanism housing
The housing has to be strong and square, so we build it with care. It’s fixed into a wall or floor that can take the load.
Spray-painted finish
For a sleek front, spray painting works well, and it is done before fitting.
When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
From workshop to your room
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You tell us about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- We send a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and storage, ready to check.
- We build and finish everything in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Getting a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

What else we make in Sudbury
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Sofa beds cost less and need no fixing, and for occasional guests that may be enough. A wall bed takes a proper mattress and gives back the floor, which matters in a small room. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Why us?
- Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- We work across all London boroughs
- Scribed to uneven walls

Common questions about wall beds
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Sudbury?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?
Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall with shelves or a desk beside it. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
How much space does a wall bed need?
You need clear floor in front of the cabinet for the bed to fold down, on top of the cabinet’s own depth. We measure this at the measuring visit and plan the layout around it.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you.
What affects the cost of wall beds
What you pay depends on:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
What we need to know
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- How you want to use the space
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.
Bedroom storage in Sudbury
About 53% of the homes in the streets around Sudbury went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 12% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Sudbury, Historic England’s list includes Sudbury Town Underground Station (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-east, and Church of St Andrew (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 53% of homes in the area around Sudbury date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.
If you live near Preston Park, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Andrew, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. The wider area includes historic houses such as Northolt Manor, about 2.2 miles west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.
