Hanwell Loft Storage

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make loft storage for homes in Hanwell, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • A loft room with too many jobs
  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving

Loft storage designed for your room

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Loft storage in Hanwell

A sloping ceiling leaves little room for a standard wardrobe. A wardrobe made for the slope follows its angle, with hanging where there is height and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the room’s height. We will plan it at the measuring visit in Hanwell. Typical reasons to get in touch are a converted loft with no fitted furniture and a loft room with too many jobs, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. Around Hanwell, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house, and painted to match. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting works for loft storage

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

  1. It starts with some details from you.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design and finish.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Questions from Hanwell

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My home in Hanwell is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

How do you get large pieces into a loft?

We measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft room. Each section is made to fit the narrowest point, and the pieces are put together in the room.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. Hanging goes where there is height, with shelves where it is low. It is scribed to the slope and walls.

Can you convert my loft as well?

No, we build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Loft conversions are building work, with Building Regulations to follow. Once your loft is converted, we can design the storage.

The problems loft storage solve

Some people want to hide clutter in the eaves. Eaves cupboards keep them out of sight. The room stays calm and clear.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • A new loft conversion that needs storage
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe

For a flat near Hanwell station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Making use of awkward spaces in Hanwell

About 53% of the homes in the streets around Hanwell went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Hanwell is partly covered by the Hanwell Clock Tower Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Around Hanwell, about 53% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Ealing as a whole, about 28%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of eaves cupboards.

For an older house near Church of St Mellitus, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. Pitzhanger Manor, about 1.3 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

What affects the price in Hanwell

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Where other trades come in

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
  • Converting the loft itself, which isn’t our work
  • Altering the structure of the loft

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
