Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Knee-wall drawers often carry a real load. That is why we make drawer boxes from birch plywood. It works well for longer shelves too.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels under the slope. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. Most of what you see is MDF.

Loft storage for homes in World's End

Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. A wardrobe under the slope, knee-wall drawers and dormer shelves make a complete set. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. For a home in World's End, it is planned around your things. If you are living with no wardrobe that fits under the slope and a new loft conversion that needs storage, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A good part of the housing around World's End is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Making use of awkward spaces in World's End

About 51% of the homes in the neighbourhood around World's End went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of World's End is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Your council can advise if you are unsure. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around World's End (about 51%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Loft conversions are common in houses of that age, and the eaves can take fitted storage; we build the storage once the loft is converted or boarded.

If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. If you live in a flat close to Grange Park station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

World's End is about 3 miles south-east of Edmonton, part of the London Borough of Enfield. We cover World's End as part of our work across Enfield. We cover places right across Enfield.

If you are just outside World's End, we also cover Grange Park (1 mile north-east), Oakwood (1 mile west), Southgate (2 miles south-west), Osidge (2 miles south-west) and Palmers Green (2 miles south). Across the rest of Enfield, our area takes in Edmonton (3 miles south-east), New Southgate (3 miles south-west), Bush Hill Park (2 miles east), Upper Edmonton (3 miles south-east), Gordon Hill (2 miles north-east) and Oakthorpe Park (2 miles south).

What happens on fitting day

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. It starts when you get in touch with some details about the loft, and how you get up to it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls, slopes and stairs and plan the storage with you, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The cupboards and drawers are made at our workshop, in sections sized for the loft stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Arranging a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

How we price loft storage

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • The internal fittings
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions we are often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in World's End?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

I live near Grange Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

A good design avoids that. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. We don’t alter insulation or vents.

What are your eaves cupboards made from?

Our loft storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. A wardrobe made for the slope fits where a standard one cannot. Hanging goes where there’s height, with shelves where it is low. It’s scribed to the slope and walls.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the stairs and landing as clear as we can.

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. Shelves are made for what you told us you’d store.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

What prompts loft storage in World's End

Some people have a boarded loft and want proper shelving. Shelves and cupboards keep things off the floor and easy to find. It suits seasonal things and boxes.

We are often asked to help with:

  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage

For a family home near Grange Park Primary School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
