How we make TV and media units for Ratcliff

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you prefer. We work across London, including Ratcliff, after a design visit and a quote in writing. People usually come to us about equipment with nowhere proper to go and somewhere to keep games tidy, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Ratcliff, from mansion blocks to modern developments. In a mansion block flat, the living room may still have a chimney breast and alcoves, and walls that are far from flat, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. TV and media units are designed for whichever you have.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke furniture takes longer than buying from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. For a short stay, a standalone stand can make more sense. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, leaving gaps or crowding a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Common questions about TV and media units

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Limehouse station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

My home in Ratcliff is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do TV units need ventilation?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. We give each box its own space, and it’s worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

How do I get a quote for TV and media units in Ratcliff?

It’s easiest to send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

How fitting day works

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Arranging a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, message us from the contact page. The written quote follows the visit.

Close to Stepney Green Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If you live in a flat close to Limehouse station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to Marion Richardson Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
