Loft Storage in Ladywell

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on loft storage in Ladywell starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Boxes and suitcases with no home

Loft storage for your home in Ladywell

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

In a loft room, walls and floors are seldom square. Standard furniture leaves visible gaps. We scribe our storage to the slopes and walls, and set it level. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

About our loft storage in Ladywell

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. Our loft storage includes eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers, wardrobes under sloping ceilings and dormer shelving, all made for the shape of the room. In Ladywell, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Typical reasons to get in touch are a loft room with too many jobs and no wardrobe that fits under the slope; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around Ladywell were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of awkward spaces: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. That is where fitted storage comes in, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Questions from Ladywell

I live near Ladywell station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

My home in Ladywell is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good. These practical tips help:

  • Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
  • Count the clothes you’ll need to hang
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. If anything isn’t right with the storage, send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll talk it through.

Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.

What happens on fitting day

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn. Let us know about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
  5. The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.

What affects the price in Ladywell

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Your postcode and the borough

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
