Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Make sure walls are dry before units go in
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Plan lighting with your electrician

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth surface that wipes clean.

It is useful to know what you’ll keep before we measure. We plan the layout around your clothes, so a clear-out first gives a better design.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in East End of London

A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, fitted out with hanging, shelves and drawers. Everything is made in our workshop and fitted to the room, so it follows the walls and sits level. People normally come to us about setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and the right mix of long and short hanging; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so we check before fixing into them. Around East End of London, where many homes were built since 2000, it’s part of every design visit. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Questions from East End of London

How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in East End of London?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in East End of London?

Yes, East End of London is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window. We plan it during the design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes, it helps keep clothes fresh and damp away. The design allows air to circulate, and any damp on the walls should be sorted before fitting.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
  3. You receive a written quote for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Advice

Honest limits

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Building a new partition wall
  • Getting consent under your lease

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

East End of London homes and walk-in wardrobes

About 36% of the homes in the streets around East End of London went up since 2000, and about 21% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of East End of London, 23 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Tower Hamlets is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to East End of London fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

For a flat near Shadwell station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live near Stepney Green Park, walk-in wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For a family home near St Mary and St Michael Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Is bespoke worth it?

There is a place for both. In a square room with a tight budget, a ready-made system may be enough. For tricky rooms, period homes or a built-in look, a bespoke design tends to earn its place. In an open-plan room, standalone pieces can look scattered, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
