Window seats in Kentish Town, Camden

Thinking about window seats in Kentish Town? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing, before anything is made.

Window seats in Kentish Town: what you get

A radiator under the window is common, and a seat has to work with it. A seat built over a radiator needs a grille or an open front, so the heat isn’t trapped. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. We will look at your radiator during the design visit in Kentish Town. If you are living with a radiator under the window getting in the way and a nursery or bedroom short of storage, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Kentish Town, so storage has to be found in the hallway, the recesses and any bay. Window seats are made in sections that fit the stairs, lift and doors, then assembled in place. Boilers and fuse boards in a hall cupboard keep the access and ventilation they need.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Common questions about window seats

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Kentish Town?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do you make window seats for homes in Kentish Town?

Yes, Kentish Town is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Camden and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

What does a bespoke window seat cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. We set it all out in a written quote.

What materials do you use for window seats?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Could you do it yourself?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A ready-made bench is built for a flat wall and a square corner, but bays have angled sides and walls that are rarely flat. In a bay, a standard bench leaves tricky gaps. A seat made for the window follows every angle. It costs more than a bench, and what you get is a seat that belongs to the room. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. The sections are assembled once inside.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
  2. We measure the window, the cill and any radiator or shutters.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every lid and drawer with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.

Getting ready for fitting day

Making use of tricky spaces in Kentish Town

About 43% of the homes in the area around Kentish Town went up before 1919, and about 21% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 117 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Kentish Town. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and window seats can be designed to work around them. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. So a van fitting furniture in Kentish Town typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension arranged through the council. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

Living in a block of flats near Kentish Town West station? Then window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Primrose Hill, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses such as Keats House, about 1.2 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.

Where other trades come in

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Work on the window frame or glass
  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Radiator grilles

How we price window seats

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
