Caring for painted furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
- Note whether your window has working shutters
- Think about what you will store under the seat
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a note of the colour for later. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often wipe off with a damp cloth.
Open and close lids with care, rather than letting them drop. That protects the hinges and the paint. Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly.
Window seats in North Wembley: what you get
Many windows have a radiator beneath them. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. When we visit in North Wembley, we will check the radiator and plan around it. We make window seats from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are an empty bay that doesn’t get used and nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books.
Around North Wembley, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath. Each space is measured and window seats are made to suit it.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Is it time for window seats?
The most common reason is wanting to make more of a bay or window. Bays are hard to furnish, and a built-in seat makes good use of them. It gives you a place to sit in the light.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- A bay with no furniture that fits
- A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
- Toys spread across a bedroom floor
- Needing more storage in the room
Near listed buildings like Church of St John, under half a mile south-east of the centre of North Wembley, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Before you choose who makes it
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
With a ready-made bench, the colour is the maker’s choice. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the woodwork or the walls. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.
When is bespoke worth it?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Making use of tricky spaces in North Wembley
About 39% of the homes in the area around North Wembley went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of North Wembley. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in North Wembley, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.
Living in a block of flats near Wembley Central station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Northolt Manor, about 2.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.

Questions we are often asked
Can you make window seats for a home in North Wembley?
Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London, and North Wembley is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North Wembley?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
From workshop to your room
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Window seats arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch about a window seat.
- At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
- You receive a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
- The seat is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
- We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
- Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
