Flats, blocks and rented homes

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

How we make bespoke kitchens for West Ham

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and it suits many period homes. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a kitchen for a room that isn’t square and a dresser that suits a period house.

The inside of a kitchen matters as much as the doors. Whatever your kitchen in West Ham is like, the design visit starts with how you cook. Pan drawers, a larder and somewhere for the recycling are planned in early. Cabinets are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

Many people come to us because a standard kitchen does not suit their room. Off-the-shelf cabinets come in set widths, and the gaps get filled with panels. Bespoke cabinets are built to the real sizes instead.

Here’s what bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • Making the most of a galley kitchen
  • A dresser that suits a period house

For families living near West Ham Church Primary School, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Kitchens in West Ham homes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 39% of the housing in the neighbourhood around West Ham, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of West Ham, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Newham included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in West Ham is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of All Saints, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For an older house near Church of All Saints, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • New sockets or circuits
  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Questions from West Ham

How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in West Ham?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in West Ham?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London, and West Ham is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Knowing their sizes early helps, and your quote sets out what’s included.

Do you do the plumbing and electrics?

No, those are jobs for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, a Gas Safe registered engineer handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, while we make and fit the cabinets.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift not just the room, so kitchens arrive in sections that fit through. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room. Let us know about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Before fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote
