Clapham Park Fitted Wardrobes

We make fitted wardrobes in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood for homes in Clapham Park. The finish is spray painted or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you.

  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Too little room for clothes

Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

Fitted wardrobes in Clapham Park: what you get

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are too little room for clothes and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use.

With a large share of homes around Clapham Park built before 1919, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit fitted wardrobes and other fitted storage well.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • Empty the area where we will be working

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, which can mark the finish.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Clapham Park

My house in Clapham Park is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Clapham Park?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes, as long as it’s ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe to help avoid condensation and mould.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Bedroom storage in Clapham Park

In the streets around Clapham Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 17 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Clapham Park. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. So a van fitting furniture in Clapham Park typically needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

If you live near Max Roach Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of the Holy Spirit, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. For a family home near Glenbrook Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Large flat-pack wardrobes can be hard to build in a small bedroom. Our wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors, then put together in the room. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
