Chinatown Fitted Wardrobes

We make fitted wardrobes in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood for homes in Chinatown. Each piece is finished by spray or by hand, in the colour you choose.

  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them rather than packing one end. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail.

Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads.

Fitted wardrobes in Chinatown: what you get

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where that suits the room. There is no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. If you are planning fitted wardrobes in Chinatown, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and no space in front for doors to swing.

Around Chinatown, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

When you need someone else

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Bedrooms in Chinatown: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Chinatown were built before 1919 (about 50%) and since 2000 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 32 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Chinatown. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned ahead of time.

If your children go to Soho Parish CofE Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Living in a block of flats near Tottenham Court Road station? Then fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Chinatown is about 1 mile west of City of Westminster, within the City of Westminster. Design visits and fitting in Chinatown can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. We cover places right across Westminster.

We work across the W1F, W1D and W1T postcode area for fitted wardrobes. You’ll find streets here like Duck Lane, Drury Lane and Bruton Lane, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted wardrobes. Chinatown is near the A4 and A301, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Close by, we also work in Soho (1 mile north), St James's (1 mile south), West End (1 mile north-east), Seven Dials (1 mile north-east) and St Giles (1 mile north-east). We also make fitted wardrobes in nearby places such as Paddington Green (2 miles west), Paddington (2 miles west), Lisson Grove (2 miles north-west), Westbourne (3 miles west), Little Venice (2 miles west) and Westbourne Green (3 miles west). Being one of the larger places in Westminster, Chinatown is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

Around Chinatown

Our area takes in the homes around LITE Regal International School, Harris Westminster Sixth Form and Waxy O'Connor's pub, among other places. There is a railway station in Chinatown itself: Tottenham Court Road station. Well-known places in the area include Leverian collection (under half a mile south-east) and Kingly Court (less than half a mile west). Green spaces nearby include St. James's Park Lake and Ludgate Hill.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Getting a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Chinatown

Is Chinatown in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. Chinatown is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Westminster and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Chinatown?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, message us from the contact page.

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

We plan the sections around the route into your flat, and the wardrobe is put together in the room. Let us know if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, using moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice for fitted work.

Hanging rails

Rails are set at heights that suit your clothes: one high rail for long coats and dresses, two rails for shirts and jackets.
