Fitted Wardrobes in Hyde farm estate

Planning fitted wardrobes for a home in Hyde farm estate? We start with a design visit and a written quote, before anything is made.

  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall

Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Hyde farm estate

Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. If your home has a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and mismatched bedroom furniture, fitted wardrobes made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Older bedrooms typically have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Hyde farm estate date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff to keep them running smoothly. Clear anything that falls into it.

Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use.

Hyde farm estate homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Hyde farm estate were built before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of Hyde farm estate is within about a quarter of a mile of the Hyde Farm Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 50% of households in the streets around Hyde farm estate live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

For families living near Telferscot Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like St Bede's Roman Catholic Primary School, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Kingswood House, about 2.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Hyde farm estate?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

My home in Hyde farm estate is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted. We measure the bed and the room during the design visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

What we don’t do

Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Building work to create a loft room

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Why bespoke in Hyde farm estate?

Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. That’s a real advantage if you’re renting or moving soon. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room, and are planned to suit it. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit.

Why us?

  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The width and height of the space
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Before the design visit

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • How you want to use the space

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
