What loft storage can’t fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Adding or replacing insulation
  • Building work to turn a loft into a room
  • Building Regulations approval for a conversion

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Sloped wardrobe tops

How we make loft storage for Heron Quays

The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Drawers bring the back of the space within reach. We measure and plan for the space you have in Heron Quays. If you’re living with nowhere to store bags and boxes and no wardrobe that fits under the slope, eaves cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Many homes around Heron Quays date from 2000 onwards, so spaces like that are worth a second look. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Common questions about loft storage

Is Heron Quays in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Heron Quays is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

I live near Canary Wharf station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does eaves storage affect the insulation?

Not when it is planned well. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How do you get large pieces into a loft?

We measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft room. We size every section for the tightest turn, and then assembled in the loft.

Practical tips

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

Do not pack things so tightly that air cannot move behind the knee wall. Leave the gaps we’ve designed in. It helps keep the loft in good order.

Loft rooms can be warm in summer and cool in winter. A little ventilation helps. It helps the storage stay in good condition.

Why people ask for loft storage in Heron Quays

Standard wardrobes do not fit under a sloping ceiling. Bespoke wardrobes follow the slope. It is a common need in a loft bedroom.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Unused space in a dormer
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage
  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom

Living in a block of flats near Canary Wharf station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What to check before you book

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Flats, conversions and lettings

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
