How we make bespoke kitchens for Bush Hill
Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Walls lean, corners aren’t square and floors slope, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet giving a level line for the worktop you choose. We make kitchens from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are extra cupboard space and a kitchen that fits an uneven room.
Islands only work where there is room to walk round them. Around Bush Hill, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and some of those kitchens have been opened up enough to take one. The space around any island is measured at the measuring visit, along with where water and power would need to reach. Your plumber and electrician run any services to it.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
- A written quote follows for the cabinets, materials and finish.
- We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Questions from Bush Hill
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bush Hill?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you supply the worktop and appliances?
We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Knowing their sizes early helps, and your quote sets out what’s included.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
How long will the kitchen take to fit?
How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.
How we price bespoke kitchens
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- How big the furniture is
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How many doors and drawers there are
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit.
Before the design visit
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.
Bush Hill homes and bespoke kitchens
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Bush Hill were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 39%) and before 1919 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Bush Hill. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in Bush Hill, let us know at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If your children go to Grange Park Preparatory School or a school nearby, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. The wider area includes historic houses like Forty Hall, about 2.1 miles north. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Near listed buildings like The Tower, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Bush Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Bush Hill is about 2 miles south-east of Edmonton, in the London Borough of Enfield. From period terraces to newer flats in Bush Hill, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our work takes in places right across Enfield, large and small.
In N21, EN1 and EN2, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets like Park Avenue, Ridge Avenue and Private Road, for bespoke kitchens and any of our other fitted furniture. Nearby, we also make bespoke kitchens in Bush Hill Park (1 mile east), Enfield (1 mile north), Winchmore Hill (1 mile south-west), Enfield Chase (1 mile north-west) and Gordon Hill (2 miles north). Other parts of Enfield we cover include Palmers Green (2 miles south-west), New Southgate (3 miles south-west), Upper Edmonton (2 miles south-east), Oakthorpe Park (2 miles south-west), Arnos Grove (3 miles south-west) and Ponders End (2 miles east).
Near you in Bush Hill
We fit furniture in homes around Raglan Infant School, Green Dragon pub and Enfield Grammar School, among other places. For rail, the closest station is Grange Park station, roughly 0.5 miles west. A little further out are Museum of Enfield (0.7 miles north) and Edmonton Green Shopping Centre (1.7 miles south-east).
Could you do it yourself?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Honest limits
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Building work, like removing walls
- Moving water or waste pipes
- Any work on the gas supply
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
Materials and parts
- Islands where space allows
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
- Larders and dressers
- Birch plywood
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf kitchens are quicker to buy and normally cost less and they suit many newer homes. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to need filler panels and leave gaps. Bespoke is a bigger investment, built around the space you have. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
