Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and typically cost less, and in a simple room they may suit. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. A bespoke walk-in wardrobe is made to the room. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It still uses the full height.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Wapping

A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. If you are living with a dressing area in part of a bedroom and turning a box room into a dressing room, that’s what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 sometimes have big windows that take up much of a wall, so the remaining walls have to work harder. That is worth planning for around Wapping, where many homes date from 2000 onwards, so we make the most of the walls you have. Corners are designed in rather than left as dead space.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Is parking a problem for fitting in Wapping?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you cover homes near Wapping station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

That depends on how you like to use the space. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we go through the options when we measure.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease, so check it or ask your managing agent.

When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Bedroom storage in Wapping

In the area around Wapping, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 37%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 29%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Wapping, 21 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 80% of households in the area around Wapping live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Living in a block of flats near Wapping station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near William Curtis Ecological Park, walk-in wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. Near listed buildings like Church of St Peter, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Wapping, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Arranging a design visit

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

If you’d like the units to match the room’s woodwork, hand painting on site works well.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers keep smaller clothes and accessories tidy, and they can sit below the hanging or within a run of shelves.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • How square the room is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we need to know

These details help when you get in touch:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.
